What is MSP 2026-27 and Why It is Important
Minimum Support Price (MSP) is the fixed price at which the government purchases crops from farmers. When market prices fall, MSP acts as a safety net so that farmers do not suffer losses.

How MSP is Decided
MSP is decided by the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP). The government considers many factors before fixing MSP:
- Cost of human labour and machine labour
- Seed, fertilizer and input costs
- Irrigation and electricity charges
- Land rent
- Depreciation of tools and equipment
- Interest on working capital
- Family labour cost
Based on these costs, MSP is fixed so that farmers get profit over their cost.
Main Objective of Increasing MSP
The government has increased MSP with the following objectives:
- To give fair and profitable price to farmers
- To make farming economically strong
- To promote crop diversification
- To increase pulses and oilseeds production
- To reduce import dependency
- To increase farmers’ income
This decision is also in line with the 2018-19 budget promise of giving at least 1.5 times the cost of production to farmers.
Benefits of MSP Increase for Farmers
This MSP increase will provide multiple benefits to farmers:
- Increase in income
- Protection from low market prices
- Farming becomes more profitable
- Encouragement to grow different crops
- Strengthening food security of the country
Conclusion
The increase in MSP for rabi season 2026-27 is a very positive step for Indian farmers. With higher MSP for wheat, mustard, chana, masoor, barley, and safflower, farmers will get better returns and improved financial stability.
This decision will not only improve farmers’ income but also strengthen India’s agriculture sector and move the country towards self-reliance.
